In the spring of 2016, the Owens Community College administration announced the suspension of five sports - men's soccer, women's soccer, men's golf, baseball and softball - beginning with the 2016-17 season. On April 27, 2017, however, the college announced the return of baseball and softball beginning in 2018-19.
This is not a first in Owens history, although its been a while since its happened. In 1975, the college added women's basketball, but suspended the program at the end of the 1981-82 season. They added women's volleyball in 1976, but suspended the program after five seasons. The college also added men's and women's tennis during the mid-70s before disbanding those sports in the late 70s.
The college brought women's basketball back beginning with the 1992-93 season, while women's volleyball was brought back in 1994-95. Both of those programs, along with the men's basketball squad, will anchored Owens athletics from 2016-18.
At OwensExpress.com, we would like to keep every program's accomplishments and history on the website. Therefore, we are creating this page, which can be accessed by selecting the "Inside Athletics" dropdown and clicking on historical sports.
