Toledo, OH -- On Monday February 5th, the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) announced it's Player of the Week, and Owens freshman Gabe Simpson was one of the players awarded for his play the week of January 29 - February 3. It is the first time this season that a member of the men's team was named as the recipient of a Player of the Week Award from the conference.
Simpson was crucial in the team's games against previously #1 ranked and unbeaten Cuyahoga CC Challengers on Wednesday. The Warren, OH native scored 18 points in the game on 7-11 shooting and also had seven assists.
He followed up that performance on Saturday against Lorain County by scoring 22 points in a big road win, that put the Express in a tie for second place in the OCCAC. He also finished with with five rebounds, four steals and three assists in the team's 79-75 win.
This season, Simpson is the team's leading scorer at 21.1 ppg and shooting over 53% from the field for the season, which is good enough for second on the team. He is also averaging four assists and four rebounds a game as well.
Simpson and the Express will be in action again on Wednesday against Sinclair CC at 7:30, when they look to move their win streak to eight in a row.
