Toledo, Ohio---Matt Almester (St. John's Jesuit/Toledo, Ohio) scored once in each half as the Owens Community College men's soccer team pitched a 2-0 shutout over Jackson College at home today.
In the first half, Almester took a pass from Ahmad Jarrar (Hendersonville/Hendersonville, N.C.) and left-footed it into the right corner of the net at the 25:26 mark to put Owens up 1-0.
In the first half, Owens out-shot Jackson 9-6, and Jackson even hit the side post on one shot attempt. However, Owens picked it up in the second half and produced a 10-1 shot advantage.
Almester and Trae Green (Blessed Pope John Paul II C.S.S./Scarborough, Ontario, Canada) made one of those 10 count at the 67:48 mark when Green lofted a pass to Almester, who headed it over Jackson College's starting goalkeeper Austin McRae for an insurance goal.
In all, Almester had six shots (four on goal) in the game, while Jarrar had four shots (three on goal). Three others had at least two shots on goal for Owens.
Ryan Wicher (Whitmer/Toledo, Ohio) produced a shutout in net behind three saves. On the other side, McRae saved eight saves before being replaced by Tommy Merriman after 71 minutes.
The victory for Owens improved their record to 11-5-1 overall and 9-4 in Region XII play. They have won three straight and six of seven, while Jackson falls to 3-9-2 overall and in Region XII play. Owens will host No. 11 Ancilla College at 1 p.m. tomorrow. The Chargers defeated Owens 3-2 on Sept. 19 and feature the nation's leading scorer, Dayle Robertson, who has scored in all but one game this year.
Almester now has a team-high 17 goals this year. Jarrar had his 10th assist of the season today, which is tops on the team. Green's assist was his third of the season.
