Sophomore guard Da'Cariya Lanier has been named Athlete of the Week after delivering an outstanding 2025–26 season for the Owens Express women's basketball team, solidifying her impact both on and off the court.
Lanier played a major role in Owens' success this season. Appearing in 33 games and starting 32, she led the team with 19.4 points per game while shooting 43.1 percent from the field. Her ability to stretch defenses stood out, as she knocked down an impressive 44.0 percent from three-point range. Along with her scoring, Lanier contributed 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, showing her all-around presence.
Her performance earned her First Team All-OCCAC honors and a spot on the NJCAA All-National Tournament Team, accomplishments that reflect both her talent and perseverance throughout the season.
"It feels really meaningful, especially after the changes I went through, moving from Siena to Owens and adjusting to a new team and environment," Lanier said. "I stayed focused, put in the work, and relied on my teammates, coaches, and God to guide me through the season."
Lanier's journey was not without challenges. After leaving Siena, she had to adapt quickly to a new program and group of teammates, something she credits for strengthening her both mentally and physically.
"The biggest challenge was adapting to a new program and new teammates," she said. "It wasn't easy, but staying disciplined, trusting God, and leaning on the support around me helped me push through and finish strong."
Despite those obstacles, Lanier helped lead Owens through a strong season that included multiple key wins late in the year. Her teammates also played a crucial role in her development, pushing her to improve every day.
"My teammates pushed me every day, challenged me, and helped me grow, both on the court and as a person," Lanier said. "I'm grateful for everything we accomplished together."
As her playing career takes a new direction, Lanier remains focused on growth and staying connected to the game.
"I won't be playing next season, but I'll still stay involved in the game in other ways; learning, helping, and staying ready for opportunities in the future," she said. "My goal is to keep growing, trust God's plan, and focus on what's next for me off the court."
With a season defined by resilience, leadership, and consistent production, Lanier leaves a lasting impact on the Owens program and has had one of the best performances for Owens this year, setting an example of perseverance for those who follow.
